When most couples get engaged, wedding planning feels exciting. The Pinterest boards start filling up. You spend hours dreaming about flowers, venues, and what your day could look like. Everything feels magical... Until it starts feeling like a second job. Suddenly your evenings are filled with spreadsheets, vendor emails, budgets, guest lists, and trying to remember if your caterer needed a final headcount by Friday. Before you know it, you're sitting across from the person you're marrying not talking about life or laughing together but debating chair colors and whether you really need 150 invitations.
Here's something I tell every couple:
Your wedding is important, but your marriage is even more important!
Wedding planning shouldn't steal the joy from the relationship you're celebrating. Instead, what if planning became part of the adventure?
Create a Wedding Planning Date Night
Rather than squeezing wedding decisions into random moments throughout the week, set aside one evening every week or every other week that's dedicated to planning together. Think of it less as checking tasks off a list and more as spending intentional time together. Choose your favorite coffee shop, order takeout from your favorite restaurant, light a candle at home, or head to a local winery. Make it feel special! Then agree on just two or three things you'll accomplish that night.
Maybe you'll:
- Narrow down your photographer.
- Taste cake samples.
- Pick songs for your ceremony.
- Talk through your timeline.
- Design your invitations.
When those tasks are finished... Close the laptop. No more wedding talk. Watch a movie. Go for ice cream. Take a sunset walk. Play a card game. End the night remembering why you're getting married in the first place.
Keep the "Why" Bigger Than the Details
It's so easy to become consumed by making everything perfect.
But years from now, you probably won't remember which shade of ivory your napkins were.
You'll remember how you felt, the excitement of dreaming together!
You'll remember laughing over dinner while trying to decide between tacos or pasta for your reception!
Those little moments become part of your love story, too!!!!
Give Each Other Jobs
One of the quickest ways wedding planning becomes stressful is when one person ends up carrying everything.
Play to your strengths! Maybe one of you loves spreadsheets and budgets while the other enjoys creative decisions like décor, music, or florals. Divide responsibilities so you're working as a team instead of accidentally becoming project manager and assistant!
Celebrate the Small Wins
Booked your venue?
Celebrate!!
Found your dream photographer?
Go grab dessert!!
Finally finished addressing 120 invitations?
That deserves pizza!!!
Every completed milestone is one step closer to one of the best days of your life.
Take time to enjoy it!!!
